On January 12, Ambassador Yang Zigang met with Commissioner Daniel in the Headquarter of KPS. They exchanged views on issues of bilateral cooperation on police matters, aid projects to Suriname and consular protection for Chinese citizens.

Ambassador Yang said the China-Suriname relations are in sound and stable momentum of development for years; the cooperation and exchanges in the field of police matters have been continuously deepening. China expects further communication and coordination with the Surinamese police on combating cross-border crimes and other issues. The camera surveillance system for traffic and safety in Paramaribo provided by the Chinese side will go into design and construction phase within this year. China will also constantly hold training programs in China for KPS officers to promote professional training for the Surinamese police.

Ambassador Yang also said that the Chinese community has become one of the major ethnic groups in Suriname and made many contributions to its economic and social development since their first settlement over 162 years ago. As robbery, burglary and other crimes against Chinese citizens often happen recently, it is expected that the KPS will further strengthen the law enforcement and effectively protect the safety of Chinese citizens. In May, the Chinese Embassy, by working together with the Surinamese government, will hold a series of events to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between two countries. He hoped that the KPS will contribute to the success of the celebrations by maintaining safety and order.

Commissioner Daniel extended her gratitudes to the Chinese side and the Embassy for the efforts to promote the police cooperation and the equipments donated to the KPS. She said that the KPS would like to keep close contact and coordination with the Chinese side to enhance the cooperation in fighting crimes and implementing aid projects. For the current economic downturn and other reasons, the number of robberies and burglaries has increased and many victims are from the Chinese community. The KPS is committed to protecting all citizens in Suriname, including Chinese citizens. Daniel also advised the local Chinese to learn more Surinamese languages so as to better protect their legitimate rights and interests.

Ambassador Yang and Commissioner Daniel both agreed to establish effective communication mechanism to further promote the mutually beneficial cooperation in various fields.
