On 19 February 2017, the Confucius Institute officially opened on the campus of Anton de Kom University of Suriname(AdeKUS) through the partnership of Zhejiang Sci-Tech University of China(ZSTU) and AdeKUS. The ceremony was held with congratulatory speeches from H.E. Zhang Jinxiong, the Chinese Ambassador, H.E. Ashwin Adhin, Vice-President of Suriname, H.E. Patrick Pengel, Minister of Education, Science and Culture ad interim, Professor Chen Jianyong, Vice-President of ZSTU, and Professor Jack Menke, Rector of AdeKUS, and featured with cultural performances by both the delegation of ZSTU as well as artists from Suriname. The highlight of the evening was the unveiling of the Confucius Institute nameplate by Professor Chen Jianyong and Professor Jack Menke, followed by warm congratulatory message from Hanban, the Headquarter of Confucius Institute.
The history between Suriname and China dates back to 163 years ago when Chinese labors first settled down in this country. The Chinese community has become an integral part of the multi-ethnic society of Suriname. The Chinese culture has also enriched its diversified culture. This has set the tone for the evening and acknowledged by many guest speakers. Ambassador Zhang Jinxiong expounded on the significance of Confucius, a great philosopher and educator, in Chinese culture and his influence beyond his times, attributed the launch of the Institute to the seven-year long unremitting efforts of both China and Suriname and expressed full confidence in the bright future of the Institute. While Vice-president Adhin stated that the opening of the Institute is a milestone in Suriname-China relationship and it will help with the preservation of Suriname's diversified cultural heritage.
With 511 institutes worldwide, Confucius Institute provides Chinese language courses and promotes cultural and intellectual exchanges between China and the rest of the world. Professor Chen noted that ZSTU will guarantee sufficient resources and present the essence of Chinese culture to the Surinamese people by making full use of its own advantages, allowing the Confucius institute at the AdeKUS to develop with quality.
